Based on the success of this we invited six high school grandchildren to share brunch/breakfast with us a few days later. All agreed to join us, making it five boys and one girl. Cate Wunrow was the girl. The soon-to-be-men included Cory and Jamie Wunrow (Whitnall HS), Matthew Basting (Franklin HS), Dayton and Josiah Culver (Waukesha South HS). Again we served the Resurrection Egg dish, this time laced with cubed ham. The large fruit bowl was passed around the room and by the end of the round it was nearly empty.
Some of these kids know each other and others didn’t, so we took time to make introductions. One of our conversation starters was for each one to tell us three things about their high school. From then on the talk at the table took on a life of its own and we didn’t need to do any prompting. Most of the talk was light and humorous. Maybe it was the presence of a girl that prompted everyone to be funny. Maybe it was the size of the group, six. And they brought their appetites with them. Since there was little interest in after- the-meal table talk like the older group, the group divided into two groups to play a couple of games; one a board game and the other a card game. It was enjoyable to see and feel the emerging bonds.
We came away from these two family events with a warm feeling of bonding towards us and between our guests, and that we would like to continue this as a Christmas tradition.
